North Ferry connects Shelter Island with Greenport on the North Fork. South Ferry connects the island with North Haven. These are separate approaches to the island, so “near the ferry” is not enough to identify where a pickup should happen.
When you call, tell us the island address and whether your pet is at home or already with a veterinarian off the island. We’ll discuss the location, the crossing involved, and the people coordinating the handoff. Please do not book transportation or travel to a ferry landing on the assumption that a pickup has been arranged.
If your pet is still on the island
Start by telling us where your pet is, their approximate weight, and who is available at the property. Mention any entrance instructions or circumstances that affect access. We will confirm whether we can arrange the pickup and explain the next steps before you commit.
Ferry schedules and operating conditions can change. The operators’ websites above are the right place for current crossing information; our team will confirm the aftercare appointment with you. A ferry departure time is not itself a pickup appointment.
If your veterinarian is on the North Fork or South Fork
Your pet may already be at an off-island hospital. In that case, give us the hospital’s address and release contact rather than arranging to bring your pet back to Shelter Island first. We can discuss collection from that location and plan the return with your family.
A seasonal stay also affects the return conversation. If you will leave the island soon, tell us where you expect to be when your pet’s ashes are ready. We need to confirm that arrangement alongside the package and timing.
Choosing private aquamation

Questions from Shelter Island families
Should I bring my pet to a ferry terminal?
Please call first. We need to agree on an appropriate pickup location and handoff. Do not assume a ferry terminal is a collection point.
Can Diamond bypass ferry scheduling?
No. Diamond includes expedited 3-day service, but pickup and return access still need to be arranged. Tell us your timing needs so we can confirm what is possible before you choose it.
Can you collect from my off-island veterinarian instead?
We can discuss that option. Provide the hospital’s name, its location, and the release contact so we can plan around where your pet is currently being cared for.
